get off my back

3 May 2006 In: UnderShock

Not everyday where you get to see something that highly resembles a human’s face on the back of a spider. The rare light green araneid’s stripes form a likeness of a human face. This guy must have lived a crappy previous life having to reincarnate on the back of a spider.

mother of all star wars collection

3 May 2006 In: UnderShock

A collection of Star Wars collection consisting of 400 action figures and 50 vehicles is huge by any standards. I can’t imagine how much this set would sell for if an interested collector were interested in buying it. Is it even possible to put a price on 28 years of memories?

JVC has announced the GY-HD250U, an affordable studio-level camera. Of course, it can’t be classified as a studio camera unless it features HD technology, and luckily it does. The unique thing is that the camera offers functionality in both High Definition and Standard Definition, so users who are used to SD won’t have a hard time adapting to the new technology. It’s an overall top notch camera, and as such boasts a pretty heavy price tag. That’s a bummer, but you really can’t blame JVC with all that they’re offering here. Read the rest of this entry »

Big congrats to Justin and the very sexy Julie (shhh don’t tell my wife) at Helio for a successful launch of Helio. I had chance to meet with these fine folks during CTIA 2006 for a briefing about Helio. Helio is a cool network with extra goodies not offered by other carriers. Read the rest of this entry »

Stick it to Anna

2 May 2006 In: UnderShock, money

news.jpgOn principle alone, Anna doesn’t deserve half of Marshall’s $1.6 billion. It’s simple; I just don’t want her to have all that money. Some might say she deserve the money because she gave up 2 ½ years courting the dude and then spent another 14-months married to the old geezer. Bah! It wasn’t like she had to wipe his ass every day or endured pain and suffering during the marriage. On the contrary, Marshall gave her buckets of cash and lavish gifts. So, give the money to his son, an orphanage or the cancer foundation, just don’t give her a dime. For what it’s worth, I’m happy they’re fighting her on this.

Is $1,099 for UMPC too high?

Samsung Q1 UMPC

Hell freaking yes! It’s worth noting that this price tag doesn’t even include the optional add-ons such as an extended-life battery or a travel case with a built-in keyboard. In my opinion, UMPCs cost nearly as much as a tablet pc and it’s not that portable when you have to lug around all the accessories. I’m a sucker for new gadgets but not stupid enough to buy the first generation of the UMPC! Vincent’s advice for the day – save your hard earned money.

If you have gobbles of cash lying around, run to Best Buy on May 7th and get yourself a Q1. Enjoy it, love it, cherish it…it’ll be the most expensive and over hyped piece of junk for a gadget you’ll ever buy.

P.S. Knock the price down four or five Benjamins and I’ll change my mind(maybe).

The Russo-Baltique Impression concept car

1 May 2006 In: UnderShock

Concept cars are one of many highlights during an auto show and there is a good reason for that. First of all concept cars feature stuff that we would only dream of, and second they look freaking cool. Take Nissan’s Pivo for instance, and the features it includes. Well two countries which at one point were rather hostile against each other decided to bury the hatchet and design a concept car that in my opinion is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I’m talking here about Germany’s GERG and Russia’s Russo-Balt car companies which are rather popular in what they do.

The Sony Reader, which we examined last week, is a unique device, powered by some of the most impressive technology available. Using a screen that requires very little battery power to operate, the Reader can display 7,500 page turns per charge, and doesn’t require a backlight in order to illuminate the screen. How is this possible? It’s actually quite simple; it’s all thanks to a little technology called electronic ink (also known as electronic paper).

UMPCs: Will They Be Successful?

1 May 2006 In: UnderShock, science & technology

In the time between Microsoft’s Origami announcement back at this year’s CeBIT convention and now, we’ve had quite a few letdowns about the capabilities and features contained inside these devices. As time wears on, the appeal of this new technology lessens as prices go up, features go down, and features that are needed for the devices to be truly mobile are nowhere to be found. With the majority of UMPCs hovering on or above the $999 price line, do these devices have a chance of being truly successful?
